Federal Tax Credits
On February 17th, 2009, President Obama signed The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. This bill made significant changes to energy efficiency credits available to homeowners.
  • All homeowners are eligible for the 2009-2010 energy efficiency rebates, even if you collected energy rebates in 2008 and prior
  • The tax credit has been raised from 10% to 30% of the total installed cost of the job. (up to $1,500.00)
  • Previous dollar amount caps have been removed to allow a 30% rebate (up to $1,500.00)
  • If you opt to install certain systems, like GEO-THERMAL heating and cooling, the $1500 limit is removed and you may receive 30% of the total installed cost in credits
Q:
Can the homeowner claim $1,500 in tax credits for improvements made in 2009 and claim new improvements in 2010?
A:
Taxpayers may only be eligible for a total of $1,500 for both 2009 and 2010 combined.
Q:
Can the homeowner use the entire $1,500 credit towards the installation of one appliance?
A:
Yes, the credit may be used to install a single appliance such as a qualified water heater, furnace, air conditioner or heat pump.
Q:
What if 30% of the total installed cost doesn't add up to $1,500? Do I lose that extra amount?
A:
No, that extra amount may be "banked" and used towards other energy efficient purchases.
Q:
Does the credit apply to the cost of the equipment or equipment plus labor?
A:
The credit applies to the total installed cost of the qualified appliance, which includes labor.
Q:
What is the difference between a tax credit and a tax deduction?
A:
A tax credit applies against a taxpayer's liability. A tax deduction applies against a taxpayer's income, lowering the adjusted gross income. Tax credits have a greater benefit to the taxpayer. For example: with a $1,500 tax credit, if a taxpayer owes $2,000 in taxes, their liability is reduced to $500. If they happen to owe nothing, they can expect $1,500 on top of their additional tax refunds.
Natural Gas Rebates
Currently, residential National Fuel customers are eligible to receive additional rebates for updating to energy efficient gas appliances. You can receive rebates over $500 from National Fuel Gas! And remember, these rebates are in ADDITION to any tax federal credits!
